Hi, I’m Charmaine.

The person you call when the system stops making sense.

I work with teams and leaders in complex, high-pressure environments to understand the system they are operating in, so they can change how they act within it.

WHERE GOOD TEAMS GET STUCK

You wouldn’t expect a professional athlete to perform without a coach. You wouldn’t expect a musician to develop mastery without sustained practice and feedback. Yet we routinely expect people to walk into leadership roles, join high-performing teams, and navigate complex organisations without ever being taught how to collaborate, make decisions under pressure, or figure out what is actually happening when things stop making sense.

In some environments, you have time to find your feet. In others, the cost of getting it wrong is too high to wait.

I work with teams that cannot afford to keep applying quick fixes to deep problems.

WHAT I DO

I help teams tackle complex problems, the kind with no obvious cause and no quick fix. Using human-centred design, I guide teams to understand a problem properly before jumping to solutions, then test and adjust ideas as they learn.

That means building the capacity to notice what is actually happening rather than what is assumed. It means developing shared ways of making decisions, navigating uncertainty, and learning from experience. It means identifying the processes and patterns so deeply embedded that they have become invisible, even when they are getting in the way.

My work is evidence-informed and field-tested. It draws on research, on complexity-informed methods, and on years of experience in environments where the stakes are high and the answers are rarely obvious.

This is not about tools or frameworks. It is about developing a shared language and the mindset to actually see what is happening in your system, name it, and respond differently. I bring the research and the method; your team brings the context. That is where the work begins.

WHY ME

My unusually broad academic and practice background provides a range of lenses that distinguish my approach.

I have a PhD in how teams develop the capacity for collective sense-making in high pressure uncertainty environments. Other academic qualifications include post-graduate qualifications in Business (MBA), Management, Education and Critical Care Nursing. I also hold a certificate as vocational paramedic. I have held leadership roles across the acute care spectrum, and I have experience working in various fast paced environments, including the oil and gas industry, fast moving consumer goods, health and safety and emergency care in South Africa and across the African continent.

The combination of academic rigour and applied experience in environments where decisions happen fast and the margin for error is small is what I bring to my work with teams.

Evidence-informed. Field-tested from the emergency centre to the boardroom.
